6 of October City was once part of the Giza Governorate until 2008, when it was separated and made its own separate governorate. Located just 32 km south of Cairo, 6 of October is 17 km away from the Great Pyramids of Giza. The city has a size of 400 km. In April 2011, the 6 October Governorate was disbanded, and the city was returned to the Giza Governorate.
Established in 1979 by President Anwar El Sadat, to accommodate the increasing population, the citys name refers to the military victory on 6 October, 1973 in the October/Yom Kippur War, when the Egyptian military successfully crossed the Suez Canal.
Today, the area is made up of several luxury compounds and gated communities as it was a prime real estate development area when it was first commissioned. There are many clubs in the area for children and families to spend the day, as well as a theme park called Dream Park. Many international universities are also located in the area, as there was more space for their buildings to be established.
There are still many compounds and real estate projects underway in 6 October City, and there is even a plan underway to build the largest mall in the Middle East Mall of Arabia.
